Solar Panel Technology

The process to turn solar energy into electricity was discovered nearly two centuries ago by French physicist Edmond Becquerel in 1839. This process is known as the photovoltaic effect.

Becquerel discovered specific materials, such as selenium, react to light. His initial tests converted less than 1% of applied light to electricity. Since the 1800's, this technology has made significant strides. Now, a homeowner can install rooftop solar panels and convert solar energy into electricity for the household. The average household solar panel is around 20 to 25 percent efficient at turning sunlight into electricity.

It may sound like solar panel technology hasn't improved a great deal in nearly 200 years, but capturing 20 to 25 percent of the energy from the sun's rays is a remarkable achievement. Homeowners may be able to decrease their dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels, and potentially shrink their monthly energy bills. Some states might even allow homeowners to sell solar-generated power back to the grid.
